The Story
Behind the Labels
REAL PEOPLE,
REAL STORIES,
REAL WINE
To us, heritage is all about family, fun and foibles.
Our Heritage range pays tribute to some of the
people, places and pursuits that have richly
coloured Bleasdale’s legacy.
MULBERRY TREE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Named after an ancient tree growing in the middle of the block the “Mulberry Tree” Cabernet Sauvignon is one of our most popular wines. So too is the iconic photo used on the label…
Those that have worked in our winery and vineyards over the years, more often than not Potts family and friends, have very much enjoyed the product they produced. This photo was used in some of our earlier marketing with a line “you’re lucky we didn’t drink it all ourselves”.
BREMERVIEW SHIRAZ
With the passing of his mother Alice, in 1935 A.B. (Artie) Potts (right) inherited the winery and original section of Bleasdale and ran the business until his passing in 1962. By 1939, he had a bridge built across the creek and added a floodgate to control the floodwaters in both Bleasdale’s vineyards and for those of his neighbours.
The bounty of the Bremer River was more fully utilised and is still in use today in Bleasdale’s “Bremerview” Vineyard. A true expression of Langhorne Creek Shiraz, this is a medium bodied wine showing intense dark berry fruit and spice aromas.
Like most family members of the Potts family, Frank II was an ardent cricketer, and many a mostly friendly match was played on the Bleasdale property, with the ubiquitous red gum used as “stumps’.
Malbec is rarely used as a varietal wine in Australia. Bleasdale however, has been producing fine table wine from this versatile variety since 1961. In fact, Malbec was the base for the first table wine produced under the Bleasdale label.
THE BROADSIDE
SHIRAZ/CABERNET/MALBEC
Lloyd Stanley ‘Sticky’ Potts was a motorcycling enthusiast all his life, and the label features an old photo of a young Sticky practicing his speedway broad-side turns. Sticky was the youngest of Frank Potts II’s eleven children. In 1932 he entered his first Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island and came Second.
This is the great Australian red blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Malbec.
POTTS’ CATCH
VERDELHO
Henry “Fiddle” Potts, shown on the right, a grandson of Bleasdale’s founder Frank Potts, took to fishing in Lake Alexandrina during the Great Depression to supplement his family’s income. This monster Mulloway, well over 80 kilograms, no doubt helped.
The “Potts’ Catch” Verdelho uses grapes hand-picked from the over 100 year old vines, planted by Frank. Verdelho was originally used as a fortified wine. Bleasdale produce both a fortified and table wine from this varietal.
