Sustainability
And Our Vineyards

THE BLEASDALE
ECO VINEYARD PROJECT

Under the stewardship of Sarah Keough, we are continually adopting vineyard management and winemaking practices that move towards minimal intervention.

Bleasdale is a historic winery seeking to continue its evolution as an environmentally sustainable business. Annual review processes are conducted to improve practices regarding water conservation, recycling, green energy and energy usage, including being an active participant in the EcoVineyards and Flows for the Future programs. We are continually adopting winemaking practices that move towards minimal intervention winemaking.

The Bleasdale vineyards have received the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) accreditation. We are in the process of attaining the same accreditation for the winery and bottling hall.

ECO VINEYARDS

Bleasdale is a proud member of the EcoVineyard Program. The EcoVineyard concept incorporates native insectary plants to create biodiverse ecosystems in and around vineyards. These plants support populations of insect predators, which contribute towards biocontrol of vineyard pests and may ultimately lead to reduced input costs and the use of chemicals.

Locally-adapted, native insectary plants have the capacity to provide benefits including weed suppression, erosion control, nutrient cycling, soil water retention, improved soil organic carbon and biological activity. By establishing native insectary plants around our vineyards, we aim to save time and resources by producing healthy grapes, with lower pest incidence while at the same time, enhancing the resilience and biodiversity of our vineyard.

The aim of the Eco Vineyard Project was to increase the native reserves in the vacant areas around the vineyard, with the added benefit of creating corridors of native insectary plants.

The second aim was to investigate if native prostrate plants planted between the vines, would assist in weed suppression, water conservation, and cooling of soils by providing cover.

FLOWS FOR THE FUTURE PROGRAM

Bleasdale is participating in the Flows for the Future Program which is committed to supporting water allocations and a healthy water catchment in the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges.

The Flows for the Future Program is funding the design and restoration of ‘low flows’ on dams and watercourse diversions, restoring natural stream flows and allowing low flows that are crucial for sustaining catchment health.

By looking after the health of our catchments today, we can help ensure future viably and be surrounded by healthy ecosystems that are in the best position to survive in the years to come.
